Eighty percent of America's land is rural ... and you just want a little chunk to call your own
Not a house, not a condo, not a co-op, not a McMansion, not a yurt, not an abandoned plane fuselage. You want LAND -- as in your very own peace on Earth/piece of earth.

Ever had this desire? Of course you have. And we understand.

LandCrazed.com is here to help massage away those pesky knots of reservation and doubt. Our site is dedicated to the spirit of land ownership --a forum where like-minded, land-obsessed souls can indulge in the time-honored quest for land ownership. Our wild-eyed notion is to provide the impetus to make the "unrealistic" realistic.

How? Well, friends, we won't leave it just to collusion, enticement, access to information and other frailities of human nature. We want the virtual search for land to be as visceral and heart-thumping as tramping through a boggy field at sunrise as you survey a parcel's boundaries. Lewis & Clark opened the West, making real the imagined magic of a vast, new land. That's an ambitious mission, but we're up to the task. So we offer links, stories, anecdotes, testimonials, message boards, photos and maps to feed the land-lovin' beast. And judging by the sheer number of website and listing services dedicated to rural land, there's either a big market -- or an army of voyeurs.

THIS LAND is your land, this land is my land and everything else that Woody Guthrie sang about America is true. Even in these nervous and jaded times, land STILL finds a way to yank at our hearts. This is the basic story of America.

When the teenaged George Washington rode from Virginia to survey his first tract of land, he was overcome with the beauty of the mountains and valleys surrounding the Cacapon and Potomac rivers in what is now West Virginia. He loved the majestic, wooded area so much, he returned often, buying land in what is now Berkeley Springs, two parcels of which were included in the schedule of property in Washington's will.

The point is: We all are looking for our piece of America. So let's go looking for land that begs to be rediscovered and coveted and, maybe, bought.

Innocently, we drove east from Broadalbin ...

... toward Saratoga when we decided to take a back road. Better to see the green, humming countryside. A little sign stuck out of the grass. It read: For Sale 95 acres. So we called a friendly and land savvy realtor named Dave Schweizer at Roohan Realty and asked what was the deal. The deal, it turned out, was paradise.

Armed with a plat map, we bushwhacked our way through overgrown fields, down snowmobile trails and over some Robert Frost-esque stone fences until, just as we had been told, three ponds awaited our stunned eyes. For $249,000, paradise with three ponds could be ours -- an amazing price considering proximity to booming Saratoga Springs. The only catch? The land spread over two townships (Broadalbin, Perth) and came with only 100-feet of frontage for all this land-locked splendor.

We had to pass. But we still wonder ... Maybe we should call Dave, just to see if paradise is still available ..
